RELIG. (Personne) qui appartient à une secte anabaptiste fondée au début du XVIe s. Les Mennonites n'approuvent la guerre et ne prennent les armes dans aucun cas (Ac. Compl. 1842). Comme cette femme est mennonite Ses rosiers et ses vêtements n'ont pas de boutons (APOLL., Alcools, 1913, p. 65). Les Mennonites (...) refusent toute hiérarchie ecclésiastique (Philos., Relig., 1957, p. 50-3).
Prononc. et Orth.:[(n)] ou [-]. LITTRÉ: -niste ou -nite; ROB.: -nite ou -niste; Lexis 1975: -nite. Étymol. et Hist. 1673 (J.-B. STOPPA, La Relig. des Hollandois, Lettre III, p. 68). Du nom de Menno Simonis ou Simonsz [1496-1561], curé catholique frison qui rompit avec l'Église et devint en 1536 le chef d'une secte anabaptiste modérée; suff. -ite. Bbg. Rem. lexicogr. R. Philol. fr. 1933, t.45, p.171.
